Waste Reduction Week
Canada's annual Waste Reduction Week is developed and run by a coalition of waste reduction and conservation organizations from across the country. Waste Reduction Week in Canada, aims to inform and engage Canadians about the environmental and social ramifications of wasteful practices. Since 2003, the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre has held an annual "Walk Lightly on the Environment" contest as part of their Waste Reduction Week celebrations.
2009 Contest Categories
- Kindergarten - Grade 1
- Drawing Contest: Draw a picture of the actions they (the students) can take to reduce waste.
- Grade 2 - 3
- Poster Contest: Design a poster that will promote and instruct other students (and staff) in the school on proper sorting of recycling.
- Grade 4 - 6
- Radio Contest: Create a 30 second radio ad with a waste reduction message.
- Grade 7 - 8
- Newspaper Ad Contest: Design an effective newspaper ad highlighting successful waste diversion strategies.
- Grade 9 - 12
- Video Contest: Produce a 2 - 5 minute video highlighting the importance of "Walking Lightly on the Environment" in the Ottawa Valley.

WRW Contest Winners 2009
In The fall of 2009, Mr. Mark Sokolski's grade class from Our Lady of Sorrows School was the winner of a laptop computer donated by Staples in Pembroke.

Colouring/Poster Contest:
Younger students were asked to submit a drawing showing how they practice the three R’s. They were also asked to finish the sentence “I recycle or compost because..”. Older students designed a poster promoting and
instructing other students and staff in the school on the proper sorting of recyclables.

Radio Ad:
Students were asked to submit a script for a 30 second environmental radio ad that focused on reducing,
reusing, recycling or composting. The winning entries will be recorded by the students on December 16th
and were aired on MyFM and Star 96 December 20th until December 26th.

Design a Newspaper Ad:
Students were asked to design a newspaper ad that highlighted successful waste diversion programs or
waste reduction initiatives focusing on OVWRC’s recycling and special waste programs. Winning Entries
will be published in a local newspaper in 2010.

Produce a Video
Students were asked to produce a 2-5 minute video highlighting the importance of “walking lightly on the
environment” in the Ottawa Valley. Students were encouraged to research OVWRC’s environmental
initiatives and environmental issues with a local connection. |
