The Outdoor Composting Area houses
curing compost, screened compost and Leaf & Yard
Waste that is collected in the Spring and Fall. Leaf
& Yard Waste will compost naturally on the Outdoor
Composting Area by a process called windrow composting.
Windrow Composting is when long, narrow piles are formed
to allow for proper air circulation and for convenient
turning with machinery.
Here
are windrows that were formed in the fall of 2002 with
the leaf and yard waste collected during special leaf
and yard waste pick ups.
This
is the material after 7 months of composting. The duration
of Leaf and Yard waste composting varies on many factors
including type and quantity of material received and
outdoor conditions (rain, temperature, etc.). It could
take as long as 12 to 16 months to obtain a finished
product. It is turned monthly and will be screened to
produce a valuable soil amendment.
