Unfortunately there is still some
material that has to go to landfill. Items such as broken
window or drinking glass, cereal box liners, diapers, empty oil
containers, feminine hygiene products, light bulbs (incandescent),
kitty litter, old clothes & shoes, potato chip bags and styrofoam
packing popcorn are all buried in our landfill.
We are currently undergoing an Environmental
Assessment for approval to expand the existing landfill.
An expansion will give us 25 years which could be extended
to 60 years with increased diversion of organics, recyclables,
and construction and demolition material. Click here for more information.
OVWRC’s
Landfill is a natural attenuation 2nd generation landfill.
It was formerly known as the Alice and Fraser Landfill
site and has been in operation since 1977.
Landfill
material is deposited on the open face of the landfill.
Here, a dozer compacts the material to conserve as much
space as possible. The landfill is covered at the end
of each day with crushed gravel. This keeps animals
from getting into the garbage and also keeps litter
from blowing around.
