The Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery
Centre’s C&D site is an area where residents
and businesses can drop off their material from construction
and demolition jobs. There are separate piles of drywall,
shingles, brush, clean wood, concrete, and scrap metal.
It is important to keep construction
and demolition material out of the landfill for many
reasons. One reason is the fact that the material is
bulky and takes up valuable landfill space. Another
reason is that drywall produces hydrogen sulphide gas
when exposed to wet conditions.
Most of the C&D waste is sent
off site to be processed. Drywall is shipped off site
to be made into new drywall. Shingles are ground on-site
and used in road applications. Clean wood and brush
are chipped on-site and used in the composting process.
